Though American-cum-Parisian jazz singer Dee Dee Bridgewater steadily gained recognition in the United States during the 1990s and 2000s, her talents had long been appreciated in France. J'AI DEUX AMOURS perfectly captures the essence of Bridgewater's Parisian persona. On this collection of café songs (with touches of both cabaret and gently swaying tropical sounds), Bridgewater sings in both French and English, backed by a small combo that includes percussion, bass, and accordion. Songs like the lilting "Le Belle Vie" and the delicate "Ne Me Quitte Pas" sound like a heavenly cross between Edith Piaf and Cassandra Wilson, but Bridgewater's powerful, intimate style is all her own. This is a fine recording that shows how relaxed and compelling Bridgewater can be on her (adopted) home turf.
